Informer in Drug Sting Operation Admits Perjury

Posted on February 11th, 2008 No Comments

Jerrell Bray, 34, became an informant for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in 2005, providing information which led to a huge sting operation in Mansfield, OH. Some 26 people were arrested in the sting, and many were convicted. However, years later, prosecutors are asking a federal judge to dismiss the charges against most of those convicted, even some of those who pleaded guilty. The sudden reversal comes in response to an admission by Bray that he created a web of lies in order to boost his value as an informant. He is currently serving 15 years for perjury and civil rights violations.

Bray’s handler, Lucas, is facing an investigation from the Justice Department, the DEA, and a grand jury panel, as well as a civil lawsuit from many of those affected by the tainted sting operation. The case, say many officials, highlights the potential risks in working with informants who, too often, are only interested in their own well-being.

Even the best law enforcement agencies make mistakes; people who are guilty sometimes walk away, and people who are innocent are sometimes punished.
