According to a study conducted by the Police Executive Research Forum, police are receiving more reports of domestic violence than two years ago. More than half of the 700 law enforcement agencies surveyed report seeing an increase in domestic conflicts.

A similar survey conducted two years ago indicates that these rates are up by 40 percent. The executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum suspects that the rise in domestic violence is tied to the sluggish economy.

Since people have lost their jobs or are fearful of losing their jobs, the added stress could push them to their limit. These findings are consistent with data compiled in 2009 from the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

A lawyer for Bobby Brown appeared in a Los Angeles court this week and pleaded not guilty on his behalf after he was arrested for driving under the influence last month. He was pulled over for talking on his cellphone and failed a subsequent field sobriety test.

Brown’s blood alcohol content later was registered at 0.12 on a breathalyzer. The 43 year-old is currently facing three misdemeanor charges, including driving with a suspended license.

His lawyer also fought against a no-alcohol restriction, stating that Brown’s blood alcohol level was not very high and that he had never had a DUI in California. The judge kept the no-alcohol restriction due to his history of substance abuse.

The 51 year-old man was shot dead by police after they say the man refused to drop his weapon upon exiting the restaurant. Inside they found his 42 year-old wife and young daughter dead. Their other ten year-old daughter was also shot and is said to be in critical condition at the hospital.

According to a 911 call made by the wife, she and her husband got in an argument after she told him she was going to leave him.

A 5-4 vote in the Supreme Court ruled that officers are allowed to strip-search people arrested for any offense before they are admitted into jail. Before the ruling, officers were only allowed to strip-search suspects if there was a reasonable suspicion of contraband.

The new Supreme Court ruling goes against statutes in at least ten states and, according to the American Bar Association, is in violation of international human rights treaties.

Justice Stephen G. Breyer, an opponent of the ruling, states that the strip search violates human dignity and privacy and should only be performed for a good reason. Under this ruling, individuals arrested for minor traffic violations, failing to keep their pet on a leash, and not paying child support could be subjected to strip searches.

If you have been charged with a crime, you could be subjected to a strip search.

San Jose police have charged five men with murder and attempted murder after two separate acts left a 20 year-old man dead and another man injured. The suspects, ranging in age from 21 to 26 years-old, were initially believed to have committed the crimes as part of gang-related activities, but prosecutors did not add gang enhancement charges.

The 20 year-old victim was found in the parking lot of an apartment complex in February with at least one gun shot wound. He was later pronounced dead at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Another man was attacked while walking his dog a few days later by the same suspects. The man survived the attack and has says he does not have any gang ties.

According to investigators, a 32 year-old patient told the medical staff at the hospital that she was sexually molested by the doctor during a medical examination. Another patient, a 68 year-old female, also told police that that the doctor had sexually assaulted her.

The man faces several charges related to sexual assault, including sexual battery, elderly abuse, and sexual penetration by a foreign object. The Medical Board of California says it is looking into at least four instances of sexual assault committed by the doctor.

Former Mets outfielder Lenny Dykstra, 49, has been sentenced to three years in a California prison for grand theft auto. Dykstra was sentenced after a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge refused to allow him to withdraw his no contest plea.

He pleaded not guilty last April to 25 charges after police found cocaine, ecstasy, and human growth hormone in his Los Angeles home. Prosecutors claim that Dykstra and others leased and then sold expensive vehicles from car dealerships by claiming credit through a fake business.

The former MLB player changed his not guilty plea to no contest in order to get 21 of the 25 charges dropped.
